JAPALOOT / BUYING NOTES

Buying Japanese Art Books and Character Goods from Abroad

Check the edition, ordering route and full cost — with separate Mercari references for your region.

Information checked 2026-10-24 · Editorial reference links

No affiliate links are active in this guide. These are ordinary reference links, not a claim that a specific item can be ordered or delivered to your address.

Start with the exact item, then check the route. Match the title and edition, open the retailer’s current listing, confirm delivery options for your destination, and review the full amount and cancellation terms. A product page in English is useful, but it does not by itself establish that every item can be sent to every country.

JAPALOOT introduces products and links to external sellers. We do not accept orders, take payment or ship goods. The CDJapan links and Mercari references in this guide are ordinary links; JAPALOOT does not earn a commission from them.

1. Identify the edition you actually want

A cover image or a translated title can be a starting point, but it is not enough for an exact match. Compare the original-language title, publisher or manufacturer, and the retailer’s catalog number. Check the item type as well: an art book, manga volume, magazine and character guide may all feature the same series while containing different material.

For a book, look for its language, format and contents. Do not assume an English storefront means the book has been translated into English. For character goods, check the named character, dimensions, material and whether the listing is for an individual item or a set. Do not infer a shop bonus or extra item from a photograph of a different edition.

Our product pages identify the CDJapan listing used as a source. Follow the catalog number back to that listing before ordering. A similar title elsewhere may refer to another printing, version or bundle.

2. Keep retailer orders and proxy purchases separate

For the regular catalog products featured here, start with the exact CDJapan product link. Review the listing and order through CDJapan’s own checkout. Its How To Order guide explains the process. Check how a basket containing products with different release dates will be handled before combining them.

CDJapan also offers proxy shopping, in which it sources items from other Japanese sellers. That is a separate route with its own fees and restrictions. The existence of that service is not confirmation that a particular out-of-stock item, marketplace listing or fan publication can be obtained. Read the official proxy shopping guide when considering that route, and confirm the exact item before paying.

Do not add a proxy fee to a regular catalog order merely because the item comes from Japan, or assume a proxy order has the same conditions as a normal retailer purchase.

3. Compare the full amount, not the item price alone

Use your actual destination and basket. CDJapan’s shipping-charge guide explains how to check shipping options and any applicable handling charges. Review the checkout total before placing an order; a product’s listed price is not a universal delivered price.

A checklist for comparing buying routes
Cost or conditionWhat to confirm
Item priceThe exact edition, quantity, currency and current listing price.
ShippingThe available method and charge for your destination and basket.
Service chargesWhether handling or purchasing-service charges apply, and what is already included.
Import chargesWhich taxes, duties or clearance charges are included or may be collected separately.
Payment conversionThe payable currency and any conversion or payment-provider charges.
Unknown amountsWhether a figure is final, estimated or still missing. A missing charge is not zero.

Compare the same edition, quantity, destination and order date. If a route lacks a material charge, keep the total open rather than presenting a misleading cheapest option. CDJapan’s Help index links to destination-specific shipping and customs information. Check the applicable guidance and your destination’s customs authority when necessary.

4. Read cancellation and return terms before paying

Do not assume that every unshipped order can be cancelled. CDJapan’s cancellation guide explains differences by payment method and order status, including restrictions once packaging begins.

Books deserve particular attention. CDJapan’s Returns Policy states that it does not accept ordinary returns of books, magazines or other printed matter; it discusses defects and damage separately. Read the terms that apply to the actual item and contact the retailer about an order problem. JAPALOOT cannot cancel, amend or refund an order placed elsewhere.

5. Make the final check

Before paying, you should be able to identify the exact item, name the seller or purchasing service handling the order, confirm your destination, understand the amount payable and any unresolved charges, and find the cancellation or return terms. If an important point is unclear, ask the seller or service before placing the order.

Use JAPALOOT to discover and understand the product. Use the retailer’s current listing and checkout to make the purchase decision.
